5 Online Services for Counting Characters, Words, and Sentences in Text

When writing an article, it’s important to know how many words it contains in the end. If you’ve worked with WordPress or Google Docs, you know they have a built-in tool for counting words and characters. But what if you’re writing something in Notepad or on another platform that doesn’t have such a feature?

That’s exactly why I’ve gathered some of the best free online services with a built-in word and character calculator. And that’s not all! These tools also offer other useful features, such as checking keyword density, counting paragraphs and sentences, calculating reading time, and much more.

    CharacterCount.org

One of the best services I’ve worked with, as it has the most extensive set of features. You don’t even need to upload anything—just copy and paste your text into the window!

Besides the standard letter count, characters, sentences, lines, and paragraphs, the tool offers extra features like counting digits and punctuation marks, as well as spell-checking.

Moreover, the service allows you to work with texts written in different languages. The final version of the text can be saved in any format, even one different from the one you uploaded. To do this, there’s a “Save Text As” button above the text window.

    Key Advantages of CharacterCount.org:

    • Works with files in various formats.
    • Cleans up the text.
    • Supports multilingual texts.

    Wordcounter.net

In addition to the standard ability to count words, characters, paragraphs, and sentences, the service analyzes the text for keyword density. Keywords can be sorted into 1, 2, or 3-word groups. There’s also a percentage analysis—a very useful feature when you need to SEO-optimize an article for specific keywords.

It also offers the ability to calculate the total time spent reading silently or aloud. If that’s not enough, there’s a “More” button above the text window that provides access to additional features, such as identifying the longest/shortest sentence, average sentence length, and more.

    Word Counter Free

If you’re looking for an easy-to-use counter for words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs, then give this service a try. Just copy and paste your text, and the tool will do its job.

The site has one of the cleanest user interfaces. Besides the usual features, it has a unique feature that most other online tools don’t have—it can count characters without spaces.

It also counts characters with spaces, which is especially useful when writing titles and meta descriptions for a blog post, where character limits are quite strict.

    Wordcounter.io

Another free tool with a “clean” interface. Everything is extremely simple—above the text window, it shows the total number of words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and pages.

Page counting is one of the features of this service, and the second is grammar checking. However, the latter may not be useful for everyone, as it’s designed only for texts in American or British English.

Another feature of this online tool is a keyword analyzer.
