In March we reported on an upcoming live-action “Popeye” movie written by Michael Caleo (“Sexy Beast”). Well, as luck would have it ITN Studios is working on a completely different adaptation of The Sailor Man, as a blood-soaked slasher!

We should also note that despite putting this beloved children’s character in a horror movie lining-up with the recent twisted childhood trend. This film is NOT connected to the Poohniverse in any way. Popeye will simply be the latest public-domain character to get a horror makeover. Joining other formally kid-friendly characters like Bambi, Winnie The Pooh, Cinderella, Mickey Mouse, and The Grinch.

“Popeye” will be directed by William Stead, starring Steven Murphy in the titular role, and produced by Rene August. The upcoming project is described as a “raunchy and gory slasher.”

“The legend of Popeye haunts a group of councilors as they intend to open a summer camp,” reads the official synopsis.

The film is slated to debut in January 2025. We’ll keep you posted on updates about the film as they become available.
