We have some interesting news coming out of last weekend’s Comic Con Liverpool. On November 10th, Sebastian Stan (“Thunderbolts*”) did a panel where he revealed he has two ideas for films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Stan has been playing MCU mainstay Bucky Barnes since 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” and obviously knows his way around the universe.
During the panel, he was asked if he could make any prequel, what would it be? According to a fan live-tweeting the event, Stan revealed the two stories he wants to explore.
The first would take place before “Captain America: The First Avenger,” and would focus on the friendship between Bucky and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). The second would take place before 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and would center on Winter Soldier training Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) in the Red Room.
Stan on The Winter Soldier
This backs up comments Stan made in October on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast with Josh Horowitz.
“The whole Winter Soldier aspect of that character…I almost wish we’d have explored more of that,” Stan said. “There’s that whole situation where he’s having memory lapses and some of his old memories are coming back and he’s short-circuiting. He wasn’t as brainwashed to a machine if you look in the comic books.”
“There’s a Winter Soldier alter-ego who’s never known he was someone else but was functional and every time they’d zap him, they’d desensitize him more and more,” he added. “It’s actually quite fascinating. What would it have been like for him to wake up after that fall, missing the one arm, doesn’t know where he is, and the whole process of him losing his emotions and becoming this thing. It would have been interesting to see.”
It would be really cool for Stan to tell these stories, especially with Bucky in his Winter Soldier era.
You can catch Stan in “Thunderbolts*” which is set to hit theaters on May 2nd, 2025. Check out the teaser below:
