There has been yet another disturbance in the force. Screenwriter Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”) has exited the upcoming “Star Wars” movie starring Daisy Ridley. The new film is expected to follow Rey (Ridley) after the events shown in 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

Knight signed on to the project in March 2023, replacing the original screenwriters Damon Lindelof (“The Hunt”) and Justin Britt-Gibson (“The Strain”). Lucasfilm is, once again, talking with potential writers about taking on the project.
The plot for the untitled film is reported to follow Rey’s efforts to start a new Jedi Academy. With this setback many are assuming that the film won’t go into production until 2025 at the earliest. So it may be awhile before we see the final product.
Despite the fluctuating writing team, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”) is still attached to direct, making her feature film debut. The story “that interests me most is in Rey’s journey as a female Jedi,” she previously told Variety. “That’s how I can best bring my experiences to it.”
Other Upcoming “Star Wars” Projects
However, this setback on a Rey-centered film hasn’t stopped development on other projects in a galaxy far, far away. “The Mandalorian and Grogu” directed by Jon Favreau (“The Mandalorian”), is still slated to premiere in May 2026. There are also two confirmed but currently untitled films set to debut in December 2026 and December 2027.
During last year’s “Star Wars” Celebration event in London Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, announced that an Obaid-Chinoy’s film was still happening. Along with movies directed by James Mangold (“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”) and Dave Filoni (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars”).
We’ll keep you posted on updates about these and other “Star Wars” projects as they become available.
