In 2004, “Scrubs” star Zach Braff released “Garden State,” his self-written and directed film. It was incredibly popular, especially with teens and young adults at the time. In the 20 years that have passed since its release, the film is now only really mentioned for two things. One of them is a now infamous plot device that would be another discussion for another time; the other is the soundtrack. It has since gone down as one of the best loved compilation soundtracks of all-time. Next year, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the film and its music, a concert will be held bringing most of the artists featured on the soundtrack, together.
One of the reasons for the album’s success is Braff’s hand selecting the tracks based on his own feelings, tastes and emotions while writing the film. Music was also a huge part of “Scrubs,” and it’s not surprising that artist Colin Hay appears on that show as well as this soundtrack with different songs. He’ll also be one of several artists who will be coming to the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on March 29th, 2025 for the show. The proceeds will help benefit the homeless support organization, The Midnight Mission.
Nearly every artist from the soundtrack will be appearing. This includes The Shins, Remy Zero, Frou Frou, (featuring Imogean Heap), Bonnie Somerville, Sophie Barker from Zero 7, and more. “Special guests” will be appearing, which is obviously intentionally vague. Maybe it’s referring to Coldplay considering they were on the soundtrack but not officially confirmed. Or maybe it could be referring to Braff and Natalie Portman showing up. Considering you know, they were the film’s leads, it wouldn’t really seem like a celebration of “Garden State” without them.
Or maybe they’ll resurrect Nick Drake and bring him back fifty years after his death.
No matter what happens it’s nice to see this kind of event happening given how important that soundtrack was to a lot of people growing up. Regardless of how the movie is criticized now, Braff inspired a new generation of film watchers and film makers to look at indie bands and also look at the importance of how licensed songs can impact a film. This is something Martin Scorsese was known for too, (just look at the use of music in “Goodfellas” for example) but every generation sometimes needs a reminder of what can make films magical.
Tickets for the event are available via The Greek Theatre’s website here.
