Universal and Atomic Monster’s long-gestating “The Creature From The Black Lagoon” remake may have found its writer. Sean Tretta (“Mayans M.C. “) will write the screenplay based on a treatment by James Wan, Rafael Jordan, and Bryan Coyne. Wan may also be in talks to direct the film as well.
The Remake
If Wan directs it will be his first project under the newly merged Atomic Monster (which he owns) and Blumhouse. So it’s not surprising that he is already attached as a producer. Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Judson Scott will executive produce.
This is believed to be a more grounded and modernized retelling of the original story. That will focus more on the visceral horror elements of the tale and creature. All while, of course, paying respects to the original film. Because no one wants to be the one to mess up a reboot of a classic Universal monster.
“The Creature From The Black Lagoon”
First released in 1954, the original film was directed by Jack Arnold. The movie centers around a prehistoric creature who lurks in the depths of the Amazonian jungle. When a group of scientists try to capture the animal and bring it back to civilization for study, things go awry.
It spawned two sequels, 1955’s “Revenge of the Creature” and 1956’s “The Creature Walks Among Us.” With talks of a remake swirling for decades.
