Last week, discount retailer Big Lots announced it was filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy. The chain believes that several economic factors are responsible for this including high inflation and interest rates. These two factors have caused consumers to overhaul how we shop.
Shifting the focus from low cost to value driven buying. Causing retailers like Big Lots, several dollar store chains, and McDonald’s sales to flounder. While WalMart, Amazon, and Applebee’s sales have been growing. This bankruptcy filing means that Big Lots will be closing roughly 300 of its 1,400 stores across the United States.
On September 17th, seasonal retailer Spirit Halloween took a pot shot at the announcement. The brand’s official X account reposted Insider Paper’s announcement about the Big Lots bankruptcy.
While adding an image listing “Future Spirit Halloween Locations” with Toys R Us, Sears, and Bed Bath & Beyond all crossed out underneath. Big Lots is listed and circles under the now defunct retailers. Of course it is captioned with a sassy “Legal told us to say this is 100% a joke.”
Poking fun at Spirit’s business model relying on taking over empty retail spaces for two or three months out of the year. A joke that gets memed to death every August, because they’re not wrong.
