PlayStation 5 Pro: How the Launch Would Affect the Video Gaming Industry

The PS brand has flourished for decades, improving franchise games and adding exciting third-party offers. However, recent adversities, like Microsoft’s recent aggressive expansion of Xbox, pose an existential question to the legendary brand. Will Sony evolve well enough to remain competitive or lose the gaming industry to Microsoft?

There are several ways Sony is expected to answer the question, but its current move leans toward maintaining the strategy that has brought it this far. For years, Sony Interactive has focused on family-friendly entertainment through its hardware and in-house studio for gaming software.

So, it’s unthinkable that the company would expand into new areas like online pokies or acquire third-party studios to increase its market share. This is notwithstanding that casino slot games draw player engagements through real money appeal and fair game odds, especially in countries like New Zealand.

Instead, Sony is doubling down on its style of pushing the boundaries of exquisite hardware consoles. Here are some thoughts on how the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro will affect the brand and the entire gaming industry.

Key Features of the New Release

There is still about two months before the PS5 is expected in the market. However, enough has been released about it to whet the appetite of loyal customers and attract new gamers. These include:

    GPU Upgrade

As speculated since rumors about it started making rounds, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 Pro will feature an upgraded GPU. Equipped with 67% more Compute Units than the PS5 console, this version promises 28% faster memory and up to 45% faster game video rendering. This is undoubtedly a welcome improvement for avid gamers who enjoy playing with the best experience possible.

    Improved Ray Tracing

Gamers can also expect better ray tracing, as the PS5 Pro provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. It differs notably from the current PS5 console in that it allows rays to be cast at double to triple the latter’s speed.

    AI-Driven Upscaling

In addition to the upgrades, Sony is introducing a new feature that will make the extra $200 worth it for those buying the PS5 Pro. This is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses ML-based technology to provide a super-sharp image.

What the PlayStation 5 Pro’s Launch Means

While its features already set the PS 5 Pro apart, its release means more to all parties involved than just a new gadget. Here is how it affects all parties:

    Sony

Releasing the PS5 Pro will help Sony strengthen its customer loyalty. Despite bold moves by rival Microsoft with the Xbox series, the PS5 continues to lead in market sales, selling over 20 million consoles in the first three quarters of 2024. The new release is expected to drive up sales numbers by up to 10 million, solidifying Sony’s position as a leader in the gaming industry.

    Gamers

The latest release addresses most of the issues with the PS5 so loyal users can upgrade their consoles and enjoy a better gaming experience. For Kiwis, the new console costs $1137.67 ($699.99 in the US and £699.99 in the UK). The upgraded GPU and upscaled resolution are expected to drive video gaming to a new level.

    Third-Party Game Developers

The thrill of an upgraded GPU is too good to pass up. Sony announced that many studios are building free software upgrades to take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s new features. Similarly, gamers can expect enhanced versions of franchise and third-party games, including Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Alan Wake 2, Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

    Final Thoughts

The launch of PS 5 pro holds great promise for the brand’s future. Its reviews will drive expectations for the PS6, which is not expected for another 3 to 4 years. In the meantime, Sony must keep improving to stay ahead of the competition and maintain the PS brand’s reputation.
