Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s (“Do Revenge”) planned reboot of 1997’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is really starting to take shape. Camila Mendes (“Riverdale”) and Madelyn Cline (“Outer Banks”) are in talks to lead the ensemble cast. Robinson co-wrote the screenplay with Sam Lansky after an initial script from Leah McKendrick (“Scrambled”).

The Cast So Far
Tony Award nominee Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers (“Atlanta”), and Jonah Hauer-King (“The Little Mermaid” 2023) are also in talks to star in the reboot. There is still a lot of back-and-forth over whether original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr will reprise their roles. Nothing is set in stone just yet, but Prinze was not too happy about the rumor that he would be coming back.

“I have been offered nothing, nothing,” Prinze Jr. said. “They just said that to get people excited. I haven’t spoken to anyone at their company, my agents haven’t received an offer from them whatsoever. I had a conversation with the director a few days after they announced that just to be like, ‘Yo, what the hell? Why are they saying I’m going to be in a movie that I’m probably not going to be in?’ And she said, ‘Let me pitch you the idea.’ So she’s spoken to me about the idea, but I haven’t said yes, I haven’t received an offer.”

“I Know What You Did Last Summer”
The first movie is based on the 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan. The 1997 film adaptation tells the story of four friends who accidentally run over a pedestrian. Panicked, they decide to dispose of the body in the ocean and vow never to speak of the incident again. That is, until a year later when the group starts getting cryptic messages about their dark secret. Eventually, they get killed off one by one by a mysterious person armed with a hook.
This will be the 4th film in the franchise alongside 1998’s “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” and 2006’s “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.” As well as an Amazon Prime Video series that launched in 2021. (Hewitt and Prinze Jr. haven’t been directly involved with the series since the second film.)
“I Know What You Did Last Summer” is set to hit theaters on July 18, 2025. We’ll keep you posted on updates as they become available.
