Sony Explores Possible “St. Elmo’s Fire” Reunion

Hulu recently released Andrew McCarthy‘s documentary “Brats” about the performers behind the iconic Brat Pack movies of the 1980s. While his documentary wasn’t all sunshine and roses, it did have some of the group reconnect after all this time.

Sony Pictures is reportedly exploring the possibility of a ‘new’ version of 1985’s film “St. Elmo’s Fire.”

The project would rest upon original cast members McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham willingness to return. This early into development, it’s unclear if they’ve even been approached yet. Let alone how they may feel about reprising these iconic roles.

The first film was directed by the late Joel Schumacher, who co-wrote the script with Carl Kurlander. It starred the aforementioned cast playing 20-somethings about to graduate from college. The movie focuses mostly on the pressure the group feels to get jobs and start lives.

A follow-up would most likely focus on what the characters did after the events of the original film. Hence the need for the cast to return all these decades later. Something that McCarthy‘s documentary may or may not help facilitate.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about this new version of “St. Elmo’s Fire” if/when they develop. Both it and “Brats” are streaming on Hulu. Check out the trailers for both:
