In-Game Scams and Phishing Attacks: Protecting Your Virtual Loot

As cybersecurity gets more adept at blocking attacks, cybercriminals look for new targets. One area that’s seen an increase in scams and phishing is gaming. In 2022, security experts Kaspersky noted that attacks on young gamers had increased by 57%. Often, the aim is to reach parents’ devices and details through popular games.

It’s not only our personal details that need protecting but also our virtual assets. Since there are now many titles using in-game currency and loot boxes, virtual theft is also a threat. Let’s look at what virtual goods are, the risks involved, and how to stay safe when playing online.

Understanding the Value of Virtual Goods

One of the most popular forms of virtual goods in gaming is loot boxes. They’re like a virtual treasure chest, which you can open to receive assets that improve your game experience. It could be materials you need to complete a mission or skins to change the look of your character.

It’s fair to say that loot boxes have changed gaming, not only by adding to the excitement of playing but also by creating in-game economies. Players might watch ads or even buy loot boxes, which means they have a value beyond the game. Namely, your attention or your money. Cybercriminals see that as a route to stealing something of value and getting financial details.

Recognizing Phishing Attempts and Account Takeovers

The rise of gaming scams began in 2020. Since then, cybercriminals have found different ways to target gamers. They include phishing attacks through in-game messages and offering game hacks that are actually malware.

Fake giveaways are another attempt to get players to click links or share information. Some attacks even involve fake versions of popular games, such as Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft.

They’re the same techniques that most adults are familiar with but have been adapted to gaming. Since the audience is younger and it’s an arena where cyberattacks weren’t previously a threat, it means the attacks aren’t expected or spotted.

Best Practices for Gamers to Stay Safe In-Game

Fortunately, cybersecurity is advancing to stay one step ahead. However, players also need to stay alert and aware in order to protect themselves from in-game scams. Here are some top tips for safe play.

    1. Approach any unsolicited messages with caution, and don’t click links from unknown sources
    2. Check the web address or try entering a site by going directly to the homepage instead of a link before entering any login credentials
    3. Use a strong password for your account, never share your details, and enable two-factor authentication whenever possible.
    4. Only make purchases from official websites, not from links directing you elsewhere. Aim to use credit cards or one-time use payment options for purchases for enhanced security.

    Final Thoughts

Everyone online needs to be aware of cybersecurity, and that includes gamers. Knowing about the common scams and how they work is the first step in protecting yourself. You can also use the best practices for security to ensure your accounts and virtual assets stay safe.
