“Road House” will go down in cinematic history as one of the most ridiculously entertaining films of all time. The original one that is; the one with Patrick Swayze, Kelly Lynch, and Sam Elliott. We can’t really say we were surprised when a remake was greenlit, after all, everything’s been getting a remake over the last decade or so. What we didn’t expect was for it to finally happen with Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor. But somehow it happened, and if new reports are to be believed, it looks like it may be happening again.
We didn’t particularly find the remake to be anything spectacular, but it did surprisingly well in terms of critical and audience reception. It wouldn’t have shocked anyone if the movie wound up with a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, so to wind up with near 60% is a damn accomplishment.
It’s also seen it’s fair share of behind the scenes controversy with copyright questions being tossed around in addition to director Doug Liman being fairly livid with Amazon for not releasing the film to theaters.
According to Aaron Couch, despite the controversy, the film is getting a sequel with Gyllenhaal returning to the role of Dalton.
What Couch says about Liman may be a lingering point of contention. On the one hand, he delivered Amazon a highly successful film. On the other hand, he publicly raked Amazon over the coals, threatened to boycott the film’s premier (though he did ultimately show up), and made it very well known that he was not happy with keeping the movie solely for streaming. This is a quick way to make yourself persona non grata in the film industry; remember what happened to Josh Trank after he bashed the 2015 “Fantastic Four” film he directed before it released? Yeah, biting the hand that feeds is seldom a good idea when you’re making movies.
Whether Liman returns or not, the numbers for “Road House” are more than enough to make Amazon want to have another go with what could potentially be a standout film series for them. It’s kind of funny in a way that with all the controversy that Conor McGregor has stirred up for himself over the years that Liman is the one potentially in the hot seat. Obviously details on the film are still sparse and it’s a developing story, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated as we find out more in the coming months.
The film is currently streaming on Prime Video.
