Paramount Pictures is developing “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin” as a live-action R-rated film. They are adapting a popular storyline from recent IDW comics issues. Co-creator Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz wrote the comic based on an older story by Eastman and co-creator Peter Laird.
Walter Hamada is producing under his 18hz production company, as part of his studio deal. The former head of the now-defunct DC Films, Hamada advanced his career at New Line, supervising the Warner Bros. division’s horror films, notably the “The Conjuring“ and “It” franchises. His 18hz banner concentrates on creating horror genre features.
Tyler Burton Smith (“Boy Kills World,” “Child’s Play“) is cowriting the film.
“Last Ronin” will be a grungy live-action, pushing the envelope of how intense and chilling a “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” story can be. It will reportedly break from the conventional, lighter tone of the TMNT universe to plunge into a dark and dystopian narrative. This is not a journey of pizza and brotherly love, but a tale of survival and vengeance set against a bleak and oppressive backdrop.
The official synopsis is that its terrifying tale in a totalitarian future where New York City, once a bustling metropolis, is now under the iron-fisted rule of a despot. The comic miniseries delves into how the beloved Turtles and their wise master Splinter, who has been their guide and sensei throughout their lives, are ruthlessly exterminated, one by one. This horrifying massacre is orchestrated by none other than the relentless grandson of the infamous Shredder, a character whose name alone sends shivers down one’s spine.
In the midst of this relentless onslaught, one Turtle miraculously manages to escape the clutches of seemingly certain death. However, he survives by a hair’s breadth, his spirit and body battered, but not broken. He becomes the titular ‘Last Ronin,’ a lone warrior in a city that has fallen into darkness. Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds, he makes a solemn vow to exact bloody vengeance on those who decimated his family, propelling the story into a narrative of retribution.
Aside from this, there is also a “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin” video game coming out for PC sometime this year.
