Sam Mendes to Direct Four Separate The Beatles Biopics

Over the years, biopics focusing on musicians have often given new perspectives into their lives and time in the spotlight. These projects have covered a wide range of music genres, diving into the lives of musicians like Elton John and Johnny Cash. Even reggae sensation Bob Marley was the focus of recently released “One Love.” Another group will be the focus of several biopics, but this time, there’s a twist.

The Beatles will be featured in four different biopics, expected to be released sometime in 2027. Instead of doing just one film focusing on the band as a whole, multi-Oscar winning director Sam Mendes (“1917,” “American Beauty“) is chosing a different approach. Each film will represent the perspective of each member, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The quartet of films has already been fully approved with the musical rights of the band.

Sony Pictures has acquired all four Mendes-directed films. Each will “tell interconnected stories, one from each band member’s point of view.” Mendes is producing these films with his Neal Street Productions partner Pippa Harris. Julie Pastor, also of Neal Street Productions, and Jeff Jones, CEO of The Beatles’ company Apple Corps Ltd., will also produce.

“Apple Corps is delighted to collaborate with Sam, Pippa and Julie to explore each Beatle’s unique story and to bring them together in a suitably captivating and innovative way,” Jones said in a statement. “Sony Pictures’ enthusiastic support, championing the project’s scope and creative vision from the start, has been invaluable for all of us.”

“We intend this to be a uniquely thrilling, and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives which tell a single story about the most celebrated band of all time,” says Harris in her own statement. “To have The Beatles’ and Apple Corps’ blessing to do this is an immense privilege.”

All that is known about the upcoming four films is that they are in development. Mendes is still seeking writers to write the films’ scripts. We can’t wait to hear about the actors chosen to be cast in these roles. This is definitely going to be a very ambitious project. The last project focused on The Beatles was the eight hour documentary “The Beatles: Get Back” by Peter Jackson in 2021.

We will follow this story and report further updates.
