This just in-
multi-talented actress/singer/dancer/activist Vanessa Williams will lead the West End musical based on “The Devil Wears Prada.” Sir Elton John wrote the music for the new show with lyrics by Shaina Taub, and book by Kate Wetherhead. Jerry Mitchell will direct, as well as handle the choreography. Williams will play Miranda Priestly.
Based on the 2006 film written by Aline Brosh McKenna, which was based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, “The Devil Wears Prada” follows a young, fresh-out-of-school student who lands every fashion-obsessed person’s job as the assistant to the biggest magazine editor in the game. The film starred Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep.
Weisberger lived the story of her main character, Andie. She actually worked as Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour‘s assistant. So, it’s safe to assume the character of Miranda Prestley took some cues from the fashion mogul. (That’s a whole other thing, that you can find any number of well-written articles about.)
“Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is an absolute dream come true,” Williams said of the news. “Gird your loins, folks.”
The production is set to open at Official London Theatre sometime in October of 2024. You can check out the casting announcement video below:
