While perhaps not one of the most popular flicks of the mid 80s, “Repo Man” has definitely reached cult classic status. In case you forgot (or never saw it), the 1984 film tells the story of Otto, a young punk who is recruited into a car repossession agency. He eventually finds himself in pursuit of a Chevy Malibu that is wanted for a $20,000 bounty. However, he soon finds out there is something otherworldly stashed in its trunk.
Well, get ready to revisit the tale, because original writer/director Alex Cox has confirmed he is making a sequel- “Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer.”
The follow up has already been presented to buyers at the Berlin Film Festival and European Film Market. It is backed by the film and media company Buffalo 8 Productions. Cox will be returning as both writer and director for the sequel. He already made a semi-followup with “Repo Chick,” a non-sequel that had some of “Repo Man”’s DNA.
Kiowa Gordon (“Dark Winds”) is already set to star as Otto, a role originally played by Emilio Estevez. “Repo Man 2” will pick up after Otto has boarded the 1967 Chevy Malibu to journey across time and space. But, since it’s sci-fi, he has only aged 90 minutes since the first film.
The filmmakers say they will “deliver an enthralling mix of punk energy, existential comedy, and unconventional storytelling, navigating the absurd and chaotic world of repo men into a new age of nuclear brinkmanship and driverless cars.”
Producers for “Repo Man 2” include Lorenzo O’Brien (“Narcos”), Adam Harris Engelhard, Matthew Helderman, and Luke Taylor from Buffalo 8. Michael Mortensen and Ram Getz of GM Management will executive produce the project. “Growing up, ‘Repo Man’ was one of my favorite films, so to get an opportunity to work on the sequel with everyone involved is incredibly exciting”, said Engelhard, Buffalo 8’s head of production.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about “Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer” as they become available.
