Get ready to return to the “Planet of The Apes” with a new installment in the long-running franchise from Wes Ball (“The Maze Runner”). Supposedly, this film will act as a bridge between Matt Reeves‘ how-it-happened trilogy and original films from the 1970s. [Editor’s note: because other than the pretty impressive makeup from Tim Burton‘s 2001 “Apes” film, we should all forget it happened.]
The project was first announced by Fox in 2019. In 2022, the title and concept art for the fourth Apes installment were revealed, giving fans a glimpse of what’s to come. Early reports indicated this would be a story taking place decades (it not hundreds of years after the first trilogy), but that isn’t the case.
We were curious what storyline this film was going to take, as Caesar, the main character, died at the end of the third film. “Kingdom” will follow Caesar and Brighteye’s son, Cornelius, as he struggles to carry on his father’s legacy.
Owen Teague plays Cornelius, both voice and motion capture. He’s joined by Kevin Durand, Freya Allen, William H. Macy, and Peter Macon. Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison wrote the script.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is set for a May 10th, 2024 release.
