In 1974 Francis Ford Coppola wrote and directed the Oscar-nominated film, “The Conversation.” It centered around Harry Caul, a paranoid and secretive surveillance expert. Caul begins to have a crisis of conscience when he suspects that the couple he is spying on will be murdered.
Well, “The Conversation” is being remade into a tv series, written and directed by J.C. Chandor (“Kraven the Hunter”).
Some reports suggest its a limited series, but other sources claim it would be an ongoing series. Aubrey Plaza (“White Lotus”) is rumored to star in the series. Still other- you guessed it- sources close to the project say there are no casting decisions yet.
The official description for the series DOES say Gene Hackman role will be gender-swapped. Harry Caul will still be a surveillance specialist obsessed with privacy. Except now, SHE becomes entangled in a corporate espionage mystery that is bigger than she ever imagined. As she gets deeper, the surveillant becomes the surveilled, and she’ll have to step outside of her reclusive life and make the personal connections she’s been avoiding to find answers and save herself.
So basically the role going to Plaza isn’t impossible?
Producers for the in-development series include Adam Fishbach for Temple Hill, with Coppola’s American Zoetrope executive producing. MRC optioned the rights for this remake directly from Coppola’s estate. Erin Levy (“Mindhunter”) will be showrunning.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about “The Conversation” series as they become available. The original film is currently streaming on Paramount +, Netflix, and the ad-supported Pluto TV. The Chandor-directed “Kraven the Hunter” hits theaters August 30th.
