“Star Trek” is considered one of the “OG” fandoms in nerd culture. Since it’s inception in 1966, there have been several movies and series. In 2009, a new set of films hit the silver screen, doing well even among the most diehard Trekkies. With the Kelvin timeline films came a new cast, including Zoe Saldana (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avatar“) in the role of Lieutenant Uhura, which was originated by the late, great Nichelle Nichols.
In a recent interview, Saldana expressed her interest in reprising the role for a fourth time. With Paramount confirming “Star Trek 4” is in fact happening, we hope to see Saldana returning. It has been long speculated amongst fans, and Saldana herself, that the cast would be redone due to the actors aging. It will be good to see director JJ Abrams and his cast including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto finish their story.
“I mean I heard what you heard in the trades. I just heard that they’re gearing up to do a new one with a younger sort of, take on it. Like it’s been off,” Saldana said. “I don’t know if it’s from the before or the after, but that they really still hope to grab all of us veterans and bring us back for one last round. Listen, I know it’s a lot to wrangle a whole bunch of people with busy schedules. But, working with JJ Abrams, and for JJ Abrams at Bad Robot was always just a wonderful and beautiful experience for me. So, If I get to do that one last time, I would be so grateful.”
At this time, there is not much known about “Star Trek 4.” Originally Matt Shakman was set to direct the film, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with Marvel Studios’ “Fantastic Four.” A new director has not been announced yet.
We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
