At LONG LAST, the Paramount+ project starring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philippa Georgiou is finally filming. If you’ll recall, Georgiou made her first appearance in “Star Trek: Discovery,” and quickly became a fan-favorite. The character eventually crossed over from the Mirror Mirror Universe, she now works for the top-secret Federation spy agency known as Section 31.
This “Star Trek” project had originally been pitched as a spinoff tv series, but years of delays due to the global pandemic and then the Hollywood strikes prevented that. It was announced as a film last year.
Today’s news is that cameras are officially rolling, and some casting updates as well-
Aside from Yeoh, expect to see Omari Hardwick (“Power”), Kacey Rohl (“Hannibal”), Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”), Sven Ruygrok (“One Piece”), Robert Kazinsky (“Pacific Rim”), Humberly Gonzalez (“Ginny & Georgia”) and James Hiroyuki Liao (“Barry”).
“And we’re off to the races! Thrilled to report principal photography has started on ‘Star Trek: Section 31’,” Alex Kurtzman said of the news. “We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the ‘Trek’ universe.”
Olatunde Osunsanmi directs from a script by Craig Sweeny, who also will executive produce. Kurtzman and Aaron Baiers will executive produce via Secret Hideout. Rod Rodenberry and Trevor Roth of Rodenberry Entertainment are executive producing as well along with Frank Siracusa and John Weber.
We’ll let you know what we hear about a possible release date and additional information as it becomes available. Check out most of the “Star Trek” universe on Paramount+ and other streaming services.
