Thanks to the mistake of an NBCUniversal intern, we know “Shrek 5” has been confirmed for 2025. The intern accidentally revealed the news in a LinkedIn post, which has since been updated. We have to say, this is not how we expected to find out when Shrek is coming back to theaters.
The “Shrek” franchise has had such a cultural impact since it debuted in 2001. We’re just going to gloss over that brief stage where snack food were “ogre green.” The franchise became so popular it spawned four films, two video games, a musical, and a few spin-off films. The spin-off films were about Puss in Boots, voiced by Antonio Banderas. We, along with Eddie Murphy, are still waiting for Donkey to get his own spin-off.
“Shrek 5” is still shrouded in mystery, as it has been secretly worked on since 2016! Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri is very hopeful the original cast will return for the new film. We agree that having Mike Meyers and Cameron Diaz back with Murphy and Banderas will be amazing. With Universal Studios expanding to include DreamWorks Land, the new movie could help drum up extra attendance.
Hopefully the intern, who made an honest mistake in leaking the release year, doesn’t face any serious consequences. They quickly edited the posting with the information, but unfortunately nothing ever truly leaves the internet. Screenshots quickly made their way across social media, as the news quickly began trending on X.
We will continue to report when more information on “Shrek 5” becomes available.
