“How to Train Your Dragon” Live-Action Delayed

The live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon” has joined the list of titles having their release dates pushed back. These changes are due to the AMPTP refusing to reach a fair deal with SAG-AFTRA, who’s strike has reached the 113-day mark.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation announced the live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” is moving from a March 14th, 2025 release to June 13th, 2025. This is a change that Universal was seemingly expecting given the company had the new date on hold already. This alteration also leaves March 14th, 2025, wide open for other titles. However, the new date in June has “How to Train Your Dragon” possibly going up against a currently untitled Pixar movie.

“How to Train Your Dragon” centers around Hiccup, a young Viking, who defies tradition and befriends his deadliest foe, a ferocious dragon he calls Toothless. Together, they fight against the odds to save their worlds. “How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy of films have already grossed more than $1.6 billion worldwide. While snagging four Oscar nominations, the second film also won a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film in 2015.

The live-action update to the 2010 animated film will be directed by three-time Oscar nominee Dean DeBlois. DeBlois has written and directed the entire franchise, which is based on the bestselling book series by Cressida Cowell.

DeBlois will produce the new entry, along with three-time Oscar nominee Marc Platt, and Emmy winner Adam Siegel. It will star Mason Thames (“The Black Phone“) as Hiccup, and Nico Parker (“The Last of Us“) as Astrid.

We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news. You can catch the original animated film on Peacock.
