Amazon MGM Studios is currently working on a “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” series, choosing Venna Stud as showrunner. The series will be set in the world of the Millennium novels originally written by Stieg Larsson. It has been in development since May 2020, with the plot still remaining under wraps.

“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” series was originally meant to be a new standalone story focusing on Lisbeth Salander. The character was portrayed by Rooney Mara in the 2011 film adaptation that also starred Daniel Craig. Amazon MGM Studios will be producing the series along with Left Bank Pictures, based at Sony Pictures Television.

Stud has previous experience working on dark crime and mystery dramas, having developed the series “The Killing,” which was based on the Danish series, “Forbrydelsen.” The first three seasons of “The Killing” aired on AMC, with the fourth streaming on Netflix. The series was nominated for a Golden Globe and six Emmys in 2011.

Recently, Stud created and executive produced Netflix’s “Seven Seconds,” which was based on the Russian film “The Major.” It tackled police violence and racism in America, earning lead actress Regina King an Emmy. “Seven Seconds” also received a Golden Globe nomination and several NAACP Image Awards. Stud has also worked on the Blumhouse film “The Lie” and the Quibi film/series hybrid “The Stranger.” Both films were written and directed by her.

The Millennium book series is primarily centered around Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. Larsson completed the three books in the series before his passing in 2004. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played With Fire,” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest” were written by Larsson. David Lagercrantz then took over the novels, writing “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” “The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye,” and “The Girl Who Lived Twice.”

Karin Smirnoff recently took over the novel series, writing “The Girl in the Eagle’s Talons” in 2022. The series as a whole has sold over 100 million copies combined worldwide. Larsson’s three books were adapted into a Swedish series, starring Roomi Rapace as Lizbeth Salander.
