They don’t call Wisconsin the “cheese state” for nothing. While the midwestern state has long been famous for the milk-based product, it can now add another cheesed based accolade to its list. Two brothers set out to break a 23-year old record for creating the largest grilled cheese sandwich, and on October 21st, they accomplished just that.
To be perfectly fair though, this was not just the work of two people. The aforementioned brothers, Iggy and Exodus Chaudhry are only 10 and 11 years old respectively. So regardless of how talented they may be in the kitchen, they’re not going to be able to make a 360 pound sandwich with their combined four hands. And yes, that’s right, a 360 pound sandwich; 300 pounds worth of dough and 60 pounds worth of cheese. Also, again, welcome to Wisconsin.
The two brothers also have a YouTube channel with over 154,000 subscribers and the record making sandwich was in part, a subject for a video. It also helped raise money for local community food banks, which is more than fitting considering it took a communal effort to help make the grilled cheese. A welder the brothers know had to help create a special grill that the dough was prepared and rolled onto in order to start the grilling process. The actual dimensions of the grilled cheese sandwich are nearly 11 feet in length, 6.25 feet wide and 2.75 inches thick. This beats the previous record in the Cabot Creamery of Vermont by 40 pounds, around a foot in length, and a quarter of an inch in thickness.
Congratulations to the brothers Chaudhry and the friends and family who made the record possible! The only troubling thing about this entire story is the fact that Guinness World Records actually has a category for largest grilled cheese sandwich. Maybe the Cabot Creamery made the sandwich and contacted Guinness to make a category? Or maybe there were a couple of guys in the Guinness office who were talking one day and said, “Ya know what Jeff?” “What’s that Bobby?” “We should have a category for the world’s biggest grilled cheese sandwich.” “Bobby…I was thinking the SAME EXACT THING!”*
