Crunchyroll subscribers could be entitled to some money as the streaming service recently settled a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit revolved around the service allegedly disclosing subscribers’ personal information to third parties without their consent. The lawsuit also included Sony as a defendant, as they own the anime streaming service.

While the service initially denied the allegations, they did agree to settle. The choice was made to avoid further expenses that could have come with fighting the lawsuit. Any subscriber of Crunchyroll who paid between September 8th, 2020 up to September 20th, 2023 may be entitled to compensation.

“A Settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit against Crunchyroll, LLC (“Crunchyroll” or “Defendant”). The class action lawsuit accuses Crunchyroll of disclosing its subscribers’ personally identifiable information (“PII”) to third partied without consent in violation of the Video Privacy Protection Act (the “VPPA”),” the settlement reads.

“You are included if you are a Person in the United States who, from September 8,2020 through September 20,2023, (1) was a registered user of an online website, mobile app, or any video-on-demand service or app owned , controlled, and/or operated by Crunchyroll; and (2) viewed videos on an online website, mobile app, or any video-on-demand service or app owned, controlled, and/or operated by Crunchyroll.”

The Kroll Settlement Administration claims the first settlement deadline is November 27th, 2023. Those eligible for payment must submit their claims no later than December 12th, 2023. It is estimated that those entitled to compensation could see up to $30. If you have further questions about a potential claim, you can learn more here.
