Game of the Year winner “Stray” is getting a film adaptation from Annapurna Animation. The 2022 game was created by BlueTwelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactive. Players control a stray cat who falls into a walled-in city populated by robots, machines, and mutant bacteria. The feline protagonist must return to the surface with the help of a drone companion, B-12.
The film adaptation of “Stray” will be directed by Nick Bruno, who co-directed “Nimona,” another project developed by BlueTwelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactive.
“This is a game that’s all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it,” Annapurna Animation co-chief Robert Baird said. “It’s a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot, and there’s such a hilarious dynamic. So, there’s comedy inherent in this, but there’s not one human being in this movie. I think it’s one of the reasons why the game was incredibly popular, that you are seeing the world through the point of view of an adorable cat. How did they pull that off, and how are we going to pull that off in the movie? We will, even though sometimes it feels impossible, but we know that’s the essence of the game and the key to telling the story.”
Given the massive hit that was the “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” it’s safe to say movies based on video games are in again. And “Stray” seems like the purrrfect fit for a feature-length adaptation. We certainly hope it fairs better at the box office than the other recent dog-centric film, “Strays.” While that project boasted a voice cast including Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx it only took in $27.4 million worldwide. We’ll keep you posted on updates about the “Stray” movie as they become available.
