Emmy Awards Moving to January Due to Ongoing Strikes

The 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards have officially been pushed back to January 2024 from the originally planned September 18th, 2023 date. The four month delay is due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. You can read the list of nominees for this year here.

This move now places the event squarely at the beginning of the Hollywood awards season.

    Emmys 2018

The new airdate of January 15th means the Emmys, which honor the best shows, will air weeks before the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which honors film and television actors. It also means the show will air one day after the Critics Choice Awards on January 14th. The Creative Arts Emmys will be held on January 6th and 7th, with an edited version of the ceremony airing on Fox January 13th. Other award shows like the Golden Globes haven’t been confirmed yet.

These delays are due to strike regulations that prevent actors and writers from campaigning/doing promotion for struck studios and projects. While there currently seems to be no end to either strike in sight, it seems the industry is hoping things will be resolved by early next year, or we’ll see another round of delays.

The Emmy’s choice of date could also be a throwback to the first-ever awards ceremony held in January 1949. The show eventually moved to a September timeslot since that was considered the beginning of the fall television season. But these calls were made back when broadcast television was the only game in town. With the rise of cable and streaming, holding awards like this by season seems a bit silly now.

While no host for the Emmys has been announced, the award nominees are confirmed. HBO is leading the pack with 127 nominations. 74 of these are for the series “The Last of Us,” “Succession,” and “The White Lotus.”

The 75th Emmy Awards will take place January 15th at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. We’ll keep you posted on updates as they develop.
