Tech world problem child Elon Musk continues to make business decisions that have us rolling our eyes. Musk condemned AI just months ago, stating it could easily “cause the collapse of the civilized world.” Apparently he just meant if anyone else was building the program, because he’s just announced xAI. Musk is calling it “TruthGPT,” a “maximum truth-seeking AI that cares about understanding the universe.”
Musk can’t seem to decide whether he’s for or against AI, or views himself as the only man smart enough to program it properly. Initially a backer of ChatGPT, Musk later criticized OpenAI for putting in safeguards to keep the AI from responding with sexist and biased statements. Ultimately reigning in the “out of control” aspect that Musk seemed so adamantly concerned about. But then he also promptly slammed Open AI for putting restrictions in place.
“The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly” Musk tweeted to a user who asked ChatGPT’s CEO if the “wokeness” could be turned off. (Anyone else tired of hearing that word used incorrectly?)
There’s little to no information about what exactly xAI is going to be for. Other than Musk boasting “The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe.” Given that the true nature of the universe is something that astrophysicists have been theorizing and puzzling over for hundreds of years, we’re pretty sure this AI isn’t going to figure anything out any better. Especially given that the knowledge it will be trained with is information already known.
Considering how Musk’s recent business dealings have been going, we’ll be waiting with the popcorn to watch this take a nosedive, too.
