You’ve probably scrolled Instagram a time or two and occasionally seen comics featuring little blue aliens. While they seem to inhabit a world similar to earth, they face it with words and descriptions that are human adjacent. For instance, a movie is a ‘fictional narrative.’ A cookie is called a ‘sweet disk.’ And a salad is more of a concept than a food. These are Nathan W. Pyle‘s aliens from his comic “Strange Planet,” which is now getting its own animated series on Apple TV+.

The series is being co-created and produced by Dan Harmon of “Rick and Morty” and “Community” fame, alongside Pyle. It will get 10 episodes. How that will be structured remains to be seen. Given the one-page style of Pyle’s comics, it may well be that each episode is eleven minutes of tiny vignettes. Or perhaps a slight plot will be added in some way. Hard to say.
A litany of executive producers with their own experience in animation, animated series, and talk shows are involved. Perfect for creating an endless melting pot of material to work with. Alex Bulkley (Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio”), Corey Campodonico for ShadowMachine (“BoJack Horseman,” “Tuca & Bertie”), Lauren Pomerantz (“Saturday Night Live,”” The Ellen DeGeneres Show”), Amalia Levari (“Over the Garden Wall,” “Harvey Beaks”), Steve Levy (“Rick and Morty,” “Community“) and Taylor Alexy Pyle will all be working on the show.
While this might be considered an adult animated series, it really seems like it might just be more charming and harmless and easy to digest. We’re not complaining!
“Strange Planet” will premiere August 9th, and will be available exclusively on Apple TV+.
