“The Mean One” Grinch Horror Parody Gets VOD Release

Apparently we’re in the era of children’s classics as horror movies now. Riding on the back of “Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey,” and the recent news of a horror “Bambi” movie comes “The Mean One.” Rather obviously this movie is a Grinch-centric slasher. Funnily enough, David Howard Thornton of “Terrifier” fame will be starring as the Mean One. Descending to the town of Newville to make Christmas as red as his dirty suit. Thanks to DeskPop Entertainment, what was merely a trailer is becoming a full-fledged movie.

Directed by Steven LaMorte and written by LaMorte and brothers Flip Kobler and Finn Kobler, Cindy You-Know-Who is our final girl of this film. After the Mean One murdered her parents 20 years ago, she has come back to the town of Newville to seek closure. Only to find herself arriving just as the green, bloodthirsty grouch is ready for another spree. Now she has a new plan. Trap and kill the monster and get her vengeance upon him. All very straightforward and not terribly inspiring.

The film’s production comes from an immense interest in a fake trailer for the film released last year. Though, personally, we’re already getting a little tired of the horrorfication of children’s stories. To take a children’s story and twist it the right ways — American McGee‘s “Alice” for instance — is one thing. And then there’s prefacing every one of these horror films with “Hey, what if these children’s book characters went on a killing spree?” Yawn. Don’t get us wrong, we love a good slasher. But slasher horror gets pretty rote unless you know how to make it interesting.

DeskPop Entertainment will release “The Mean One” October 3rd on VOD.
