Jenna Ortega Says “Wednesday” S2 Will Go in ‘Darker Direction’

The first season of “Wednesday” kicked off well and was greatly enjoyed by fans of the creepy and kooky. But what was more mysterious and spooky to many was the ridiculous love triangle plot. The pining between Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) and Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White) over Wednesday had many of us rolling our eyes. But Jenna Ortega, now a producer on the series, says the second season is doing away with romance and embracing the darkness.

“It’s still coming together, but we’ve decided we want to lean into the horror more. We’re ditching any romantic love interest, which is really great. We’re going to get bolder, more dark,” Ortega said. Thank goodness for that. A series like “Wednesday” can stand on its own without romance. In fact, sometimes that’s the perfect thing to completely gum up the flow of a series. So what brought Ortega on as a producer for season 2?

In order to do Wednesday Addams ghoulish justice, Ortega was very vocal about changing the somber lines to better line up with her character. There were so many conversations between production staff and Tim Burton over dialogue choices and actions that it was just a natural progression.

“In preparation for a second season, we wanted to make sure that we could start the conversations earlier. And I’m just so curious. I want to see the outfits, new characters that are coming in, scripts, and they were gracious enough to let me put the producer hat on.”

Season 1 of “Wednesday” is available to stream on Netflix now. We’ll let you know what we hear about season 2. You can catch all of Ortega’s conversation with Elle Fanning in Variety’s Actors on Actor’s series.
