Biblical Anime “What Had Happened Was” Launches Kickstarter

A new biblical anime, which aims to teach children stories from across the bible, needs your help. “WHHW” or “What Had Happened Was” is in its Kickstarter phase, and will feature stories from the Bible “that tell it like it really was.” Apart from some older cartoons from the early 90s/00s, this will be the first biblical anime.

The show is created by influencer Chaz Smith, who’s claim to fame started with some very successful Vines back in the day. He’s decided to use his followers to help educate people on the Bible. He believes stories transport people to another world, and in this case, another time. Mixing storytelling and comedic timing, these biblical anime stories will be told just like they are in scripture, with the same chaotic energy some of these tales have.

The first season is going to be focused on the book of Daniel, and will be 8 episodes long. The second season is going to be about the life of Joseph, a slave-turned ruler and will be another 8 episodes long. Then the plan is for seasons 3-10 to cover Genesis through Acts.

To get this project rolling, they’ve already signed on with the Emmy Award-Winning Studio MAAN Creative to animate the series. And while we don’t have anything from them that’s been created officially yet, Chaz has created a cool proof of concept video putting his own blood, sweat and tears into it. The proof of concept has some beautiful art by David Asimeng.

The campaign is seeking $150,000 in the next 20 days. They are currently at $23,666.
