Focus Features has just released the first trailer for Wes Anderson‘s (“The French Dispatch”) new film, “Asteroid City.” Set in the 1950s, a fictional American desert town hosts a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention. The point of the event is to unite students and parents in scholarly competitions. But the convention quickly erupts into chaos as world-changing events take place.

“Asteroid City” will star Margot Robbie, Tom Hanks, Hong Chau, and Scarlett Johansson. There will also be appearances by Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Jason Schwartzman, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, Grace Edwards, Aristou Meehan, Sophia Lillis, Ethan Lee, Jeff Goldblum, and Rita Wilson. But it’s not really shocking that a small-time director like Anderson would hire a cast of such unknown actors.
The new film was written by Anderson and Roman Coppola, who have previously worked together on “The French Dispatch,” “Isle of Dogs,” “The Darjeeling Limited,” and “Moonrise Kingdom.” Anderson will also produce “Asteroid City” with longtime collaborators Jeremy Dawson and Steven Rales of Indian Paintbrush. John Peet and Octavia Peissel will co-produce the film with executive producers Christoph Fisser and Henning Molfenter.

And if that wasn’t enough Anderson is also making “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” for Netflix. Which is based on a Roald Dahl book of the same name. That project is slated to premiere sometime in 2023.

“Asteroid City” is set for a limited theatrical release on June 16th, 2023. Followed by a wider release on June 23rd. The film is expected to make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Check out the star studded and aggressively Wes Anderson-looking trailer below:
