“Freaks and Geeks” Stars Reunite to Play “Dungeons & Dragons”

“Dungeons & Dragons” is a beloved tabletop RPG that we all know the name of. Time once was it was oft associated with major geeks and nerds in high school. If you were a misfit, you probably played D&D with your buddies after school. And you also probably watched “Freaks and Geeks” on NBC back in the day. It was a show that “got” the freaks, nerds, geeks, and outcasts of high school society.

Sam (John Francis Daley), Neal (Samm Levine), and Bill (Martin Starr) often played the tabletop RPG together. And now, the stars of “Freaks and Geeks” have reunited to promote the release of “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” movie.

Sam, Neal, and Bill have been playing the same campaign of D&D for 23 years. The three suddenly become aware of the time that’s passed, shocked by the growth of beards. Clean-shaven Sam jokes that he must not have hit puberty yet. After which he muses that Dungeons & Dragons should be made into a movie. The three laugh off the idea, possibly as a jab to the extremely unsuccessful “Dungeons & Dragons” made in 2000. After which a promo for the upcoming movie plays.

It’s pretty great, especially since John Francis Daley co-directed “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” with Jonathan Goldstein.

    Could A Revival Spur Another?

It’s unfortunate “Freaks and Geeks” experienced the difficult run it did. Cancelled 12 episodes in to its 18 episode first season, it didn’t suffer from a lack of interest. Rather NBC didn’t know how to handle it. It suffered from an erratic episode schedule, and the relationship between show creators and NBC was extremely choppy.

It’s a real shame, because the tiny 12-episode season is now a massive cult classic. Who knows, maybe somewhere down the line, the revival of “Dungeons & Dragons” might spur a revival of “Freaks and Geeks.” Not that the stars of the series suffered after the fact. Many went on to establish careers to be proud of.

“Honor Among Thieves” hits theaters March 31st, 2023.
