    Best PHP Alternatives to use

Everyone has their own choices and preferences for which programming languages to use for software development. But I think what we all can agree on is that PHP is one of the oldest and most widely used scripting languages. It is used mainly for server-side development and according to SimilarTech, it is already powering approximately 42 million websites on the internet.

There is no doubt that PHP has grown and advanced over 25 years since its initial launch. For example, with the advent of PHP7, comes a 100% speed boost, performance enhancement, and lowering memory usage features. But in this fast-track digital world, many new programming languages have now arrived that have snatched the title of the most widely used programming language from PHP. What I’m trying to say here is that all of these programming languages are proving their worthiness as the best PHP alternatives as now they are doing what PHP once used to do but these languages can produce far better effective results.

As technologies keep changing, these latest programming languages are opening the doors for new opportunities for PHP developers in India and across the globe. Those who didn’t feel comfortable coding with PHP can now use these programming languages in their stead.

    Top 6 PHP alternatives

    JavaScript

We all know how widely JavaScript is used. It is the language of almost every big development framework nowadays. Also, it is one of the easiest languages to learn. So it will be an ideal choice if you are a beginner. JavaScript is a language that runs on top of HTML5. It allows you to interact with the browser using functions and objects that you create in your code.

If you need to create a powerful app that runs on the browser, no matter which device you use it on, then JavaScript is the right programming language for you. JavaScript is often referred to as ECMA Script or ECMAScript (abbreviated from ECMA-262). This language is also used to build dynamic web pages with which users can interact.

It’s particularly useful for building apps that require user input (such as forms). As such, it is frequently used on websites and mobile apps. Because of its versatility, JavaScript is also used for desktop apps and games.

JavaScript has become a standard part of web development because it offers developers a lot of power and flexibility when compared with other languages like PHP, C++, or C#.

    Python

Python is a high-level programming language, which means it focuses on writing code that is easy for humans to read, and not just for computers. You can also use this scripting language to automate all your development-related tasks. This will significantly reduce the development time.

Python is an interpreted language, so it does not require you to compile and link your program before running it. The interpreter runs the code in memory, so there is no need to install anything on your machine or use any external software.

Python has many built-in libraries to help you create web applications, and its programming language features make it easy to write code that will run on both Windows and Linux computers.

Python can be used for complex applications, but it is also ideal for small projects with limited functionality. Python also supports object-oriented programming (OOP) so you can build larger applications using classes and modules. If you are a beginner and want to learn how to code, you can try out Python first as this programming language comes with very simple syntax.

    Ruby

Ruby is a dynamic, reflective, object-oriented, general-purpose programming language. It supports multiple programming paradigms, including functional, imperative, and object-oriented.

Ruby is also a powerful tool for developing web applications because it has a clean syntax and an elegant object model with deferring evaluation.

Ruby has many features that make it ideal for developing large or complex applications such as:

    • Multiple inheritances – Ruby supports multiple inheritances by allowing you to inherit from multiple classes at once. This makes it easy to create flexible class hierarchies that will scale well as your project grows in complexity.
    • Pattern matching – Pattern matching lets you match against values based on their structure rather than their type (e.g., “string”, “number”, etc.). This allows you to write more readable code that’s easier to maintain over time as your application evolves.
    • Singleton classes – Singleton classes are used when there should only be one instance of a certain class throughout an application (e.g., a user registration system).

    .NET

.NET is Microsoft’s programming language and development platform. A team at Microsoft developed this programming language to support its other apps that run on the Windows operating system. And as Microsoft’s Windows is used widely around the world, it took no time for .NET to become popular.

The .NET Framework is the core foundation for building software using the Common Language Runtime (CLR). The CLR enables you to write code for the app that can run on multiple devices and platforms. So you don’t have to write a new code from scratch or make any changes to it every time you want to release your app for a different platform.

You can also write code that interoperates with existing .NET libraries or components.

The .NET Framework has been updated many times over its lifespan and now includes various languages that support various types of applications and services, including web applications, database applications, desktop apps, mobile phone-based apps, and more.

    Java

Java is another old-school programming language like PHP but yes it has upgraded with time and it might be even more useful now than it was during its initial release in 1995 by Sun Microsystems.

Java was originally developed by James Gosling, who created it at Sun Microsystems in 1991. Java was designed to be portable, which means it can run on different operating systems and hardware platforms without modification.

Java was designed in such a way that it would be easy for programmers to understand and for developers, it would be easy to use it. This makes it suitable for creating software applications that need to be simple and efficient but still provide the functionality sufficient for business or personal use.

Java has numerous advantages over other programming languages:

    • Java can run on almost any computer with an operating system (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux)
    • Java is platform-independent – you can write your code once using a single language and run it on multiple computers without having to rewrite it or pay extra licensing fees
    •  The JVM (Java Virtual Machine) allows you to execute your code without needing specialist hardware or software

    Conclusion

Now, I know this is a very short list, but these are indeed some of the best alternatives that you can find for PHP. It is important to mention here that although all of these programming languages can deliver better results, every programming language is unique in its way, even PHP.

But if you think it is not time-relevant anymore or aren’t comfortable using it for development purposes then it’s okay to try out these programming languages we discussed in this blog. Tell me if you have any more suggestions or have already tried out some other languages in the comments section below.
