HBO has dropped a massive 66-track soundtrack for their hit show, “The Last of Us.” Composer Gustavo Santaolalla, who worked on the original videos games the show is adapted from, scored the series. Santaolalla is also joined by fellow artist David Fleming for these compositions.
“The process of adapting, it was more in a way like craftwork than actually a new creation, because the themes were there, those things are there, like the characters, it wasn’t about creating a new job, it wasn’t about finding what is interesting,” Santaolalla said about the scoring “The Last of Us.” “For example, in seeing how Pascal and Bella, they’re different than the actors that played the voices, but at the same time, they keep the soul of the characters intact.”
The track listing is mostly made up of Santaolalla and Fleming’s tone-setting scores. But it also includes Nick Offerman‘s cover of Linda Ronstadt’s “Long Long Time” as sung on the show, which quickly became a fan favorite among “The Last of Us” viewers.
The show itself stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as survivors of a fungal plague. A plague that has turned most of humanity into zombie-like menaces.
Music has been a primary focus for series creator Neil Druckmann and writer Craig Mazin. And it clearly shows in the series eclectic mix between sweeping scores and covers of pop hits. HBO has already renewed “The Last of Us” for a second season.
