“80 for Brady” Unleashes the Octogenarian Fun [Review]

If you’re like us you were (and maybe still are) very confused about who “80 for Brady” was aimed at. The film stars a quartet of legendary actresses, the youngest of whom still qualified for her AARP card 26 years ago. Don’t get us wrong they are absolutely the reason we went to see the film, and the reason we didn’t walk out.

Sally Field as “Betty” and Lily Tomlin as “Lou” in 80 For Brady from Paramount Pictures.

Living legends Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field star as a group of friends who become obsessed with Tom Brady. When the Patriots are headed to the 2017 Super Bowl the women are determined to make their way there no matter what.

We truly appreciated the opportunity for these folks to flex their silly (and sexy sides). Where the film falls apart is the inclusion of Brady himself (who serves as a producer – which should tell you a lot). Though we are not Pats fans, it’s hard to deny that on the field, 7 time Super Bowl champ Brady is a star. Putting him in any sort of dramatic role (particularly against these ladies) and it’s more like asking a junior varsity high school player to play against…well..a Tom Brady.

Lily Tomlin plays Lou with Producer Tom Brady in 80 For Brady from Paramount Pictures.

A fairly conventional plot (which is apparently based on a true story), the film features a bevy of cameos (which we won’t spoil here). They certainly add to the age and interest demographic confusion. Also you can tell the NFL has given their blessing and or interfered somewhat with the movie based on the squeaky clean image it presents.

We don’t want to discount the idea that somewhere there’s a venn diagram sliver that this film is a perfect fit for, we acknowledge it might be on the slimmer side. So for the hardcore football fanatics considering going, this is more “Book Club” and “Calendar Girls” than “Rudy” or “Remember the Titans.” For those going for the girlies, you’ll be in for a great time, you just have to tolerate the foot game antics.

“80 for Brady” is now playing in theaters.
