One of music’s greatest jamboree concerts is getting a three part docuseries on Paramount+. Headed up by Michael John Warren and produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and FunMeter. “Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza” will cover the extensive history of the festival and how it changed the face of concerts in the 90s.
Created by Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction, it was launched as a kind of musical circus. Featuring the talents of Nine Inch Nails, The Rollins Band, and Butthole Surfers to name a few. Later years included Pearl Jam, The Jesus Lizard, and The Jesus and Mary Chain. The festival continues to bring in beloved bands as it continues. At a time when music concerts were suffering, this was an injection of new blood.
“When Lolla was launched in 1991, the concert industry felt like a boring car ride that was running out gas,” Farrell said. “We pumped new life into the live music experience and set the foundation for the youth’s counter culture to become important and exciting again…I am happy to have this opportunity to give people an inside look at the festival’s contribution to music history.”

The project is one of passion for Warren, having attended Lollapalooza in his youth. “As a naive teenager trapped in the doldrums of Suburbia, U.S.A, I attended the first-ever Lollapalooza, and it totally blew my mind,” Warren said. “It was dangerous, beautiful and instantly widened my perspective. So, it’s an honor to be entrusted to tell the true story of one of the most astonishing cultural touchstones in the last half-century.”
There’s no word on when the series will premiere, but we’re sure it’s well worth the watch for music-lovers. The Lollapalooza festival will return to Chicago August 3rd-6th, 2023. No lineup has been announced yet.
