Ke Huy Quan Wants a Short Round “Indiana Jones” Spinoff

Actor Ke Huy Quan is fresh off his Golden Globes victory for Best Supporting Actor in A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” But sometimes huge victories make us look back at the past. In Quan’s case, it’s back to his first role as Short Round in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.”

“I love the character of Short Round,” Quan said on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. “He’s funny and courageous and saves Indy’s ass. If Disney or Lucasfilm ever come to me and say, ‘We want to do a Short Round spinoff,’ I’m there man! I love that character so much and it would just be incredible to revisit so many years later.”

This obviously begs the question; what is Short Round up to 38 years later?

“I have no idea where he is. Your guess is as good as mine,” Quan said. “Just because he looks after Indy so much, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was an archeologist.”

This would be a sweet tribute since Harrison Ford does not intend to portray the legendary archaeologist after the upcoming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” Who better than Short Round to fill the position?

It’s not like fans aren’t open to seeing the two reunite, considering the internet lost its mind when Ford and Quan were photographed together at Disney’s D23 convention. Ford was attending to promote “Dial of Destiny,” while Quan was there to promote the 2nd season of Marvel Studios’ “Loki” series.

When asked if he wanted to see Ford, Quan responded “Of course!” He continued: “I haven’t seen him in 38 years. So I walk out and I see him about 15 feet away talking to Phoebe Waller-Bridge. And as I walk close, my heart is pounding. I’m thinking, ‘Is he gonna recognize me? The last time he saw me, I was a little kid.’”

“As I get closer, he turns and points his finger at me, and he has that classic, famous, grumpy Harrison Ford look,” Quan said. “I go, ‘Oh my gosh, he probably thinks I’m a fan and he’s gonna tell me to not come near him.’ But he looks and points at me and says, ‘Are you Short Round?’ Immediately, I was transported back to 1984, when I was a little kid, and I said, ‘Yes, Indy.’ And he said, ‘Come here,’ and gave me a big hug.” It would seem that the love between the two actors is just as strong as ever.

So Disney, when are we getting a Short Round spin-off?

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” will hit theaters June 30th, 2023. Check out the trailer below:
