“Dune: Awakening” Brings Frank Herbert’s Masterpiece to Gaming

Denis Villeneuve‘s incredible “Dune Part One” film made audiences fall in love with Frank Herbert’s novel all over again. Gamers will have the chance to truly inhabit the world of Arrakis in “Dune: Awakening,” an open-world survival MMO coming to PS5, XBox, and PC. Don your stillsuit and search for the ever-elusive spice; battling sand worms and competitors for your rewards.

A pre-alpha look at the game was teased during the 2022 Game Awards. So there’s no telling what the gameplay will be like. No doubt you’ll be able to create a character of your own and pick a class. But that’s all we can speculate. What little indigenous life that inhabits Arrakis, we would hope riding a Shai-Hulud wouldn’t be out of the question.

There’s also no release date on the game, especially being pre-alpha. It’s still being worked on, but we’ll surely get sneak peeks as the game develops. Whether the open-world gameplay will involve pvp or pve remains to be seen. The structure could be similar to that of FF14 and WoW, which involves cooperative play in which players can team up or play solo.

“Dune” has experienced a huge revival since the film’s 2021 release. Given the expanse of Arrakis, the lore surrounding the universe, and the style of the world, it creates the perfect setting for a video game. Games set in this universe have existed before, but not brought fully into the mainstream gaming sphere in an open-world capacity. There is also a “Dune: Spice Wars” strategy game, and Dire Wolf’s various tabletop titles as well.

One thing we can be sure of given the string of games coming this year, it’ll no doubt look fantastic. “Dune Part Two” has a release date of November 3rd, 2023. A prequel series about the Bene Gesserit sisterhood is currently in production at HBO Max.
