Mariana Varela and Fabiola Valentin have a very special secret to share. Miss Argentina 2020 and Miss Puerto Rico 2020 respectively have been more than just friends since meeting during the competition. Turns out, they’ve actually been dating! And now, they’re married! The couple made the secretly married revel via joint posts to their respective Instagrams.
“After deciding to keep our relationship private, we opened the doors on a special day. 28/10/22,” they said. This message was accompanied by a lovely 30-second video of candid shots of the couple and some video of their proposal. The proposal included balloons spelling out “Marry Me?” Then we see Valentin put an engagement ring on Varela.
The short clip also includes a video of them kissing outside of the courthouse from when they were wed. Though the couple has posted images together on social media before they were not public about being in a relationship.
While Varela and Valentin have not commented on why they chose to keep their union quiet, the answer may be pretty obvious. Same-sex marriage was only legalized in Argentina in 2010. It was legalized in Puerto Rico in 2015, along with the rest of the United States following a Supreme Court ruling. Or, they could just be that private, we may never know. All we can say it it’s hard to see any reason to deny someone the joy that they clearly feel in this video.
Varela and Valentin represented Argentina and Puerto Rico respectively in the 2020 Miss Grand International competition. Organizers shared their support via social media. “Congratulations to both of you,” they wrote on Instagram. “MGIO always support “LOVE” without boundaries ❤️”
