Peacock Passes on “Girls5eva” S3, but Netflix Picks it Up

Peacock’s Emmy-nominated musical comedy “Girls5eva” is moving to Netflix for season 3. The show stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell as surviving members of a 90s girl pop group. We follow these one-hit-wonders as they reunite in the present day to try their hand at fame one last time. All while juggling little adulthood issues like spouses, kids, jobs, debt, aging parents, and shoulder pain.

While some speculated Netflix outright “stole the show” from rival streamer Peacock, it seems the series had already been cancelled at NBC’s streaming service. Netflix was apparently just incredibly fast to revive “Girls5eva.” Netflix will be the exclusive home for season 3, while seasons 1 and 2 will stream co-exclusively on both platforms.

Luckily with such a fast turnaround, it seems the cast and crew have remained intact. “Girls5eva” creator/showrunner/executive producer/Emmy-nominated writer/Jill of all trades Meredith Scardino is still on board. Executive producers Tina Fey, Jeff Richmond, and Robert Carlock are also returning, despite the venue change.

“Today,  we are thrilled to announce that our reunited girl group will be re-reunited at Netflix. We are so thankful to everyone at the streamer who fell in love with our music-filled comedy. We cannot wait to introduce Dawn, Wickie, Summer and Gloria to the global Netflix audience,” the executive producers said in a joint statement. “Well, not fully introduced — if you look closely, Girls5eva can be seen in the background of the Woodstock ’99 documentary setting a porta potty on fire.”

This is not the first Fey-produced property that has jumped from NBC Universal to Netflix. “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” was developed for NBC, but when cancelled there, made the transition to Netflix. This show’s move was overseen by Bela Bajaria, the former head of Universal Television, who is now head of global television at Netflix.
