“My Little Pony: Make Your Mark” Fixes Power Imbalance [Review]

The next “My Little Pony” series is here! “Make Your Mark” directly follows “My Little Pony: A New Generation,” which came out on Netflix last year. As a MLP fan, it’s got everything we wanted to see and more. I’m going to talk about a couple of different things here that may spoil the surprises of the show. If you haven’t watched it already, now’s your chance!

    “MLP: Make Your Mark” Netflix

Chapter 1 features Zipp, Sunny, Izzy, Pip and Hitch. The story starts with the celebration of Maretime May Day. All the ponies come together to celebrate the town, unicorns, pegasus ponies, and Earth ponies. Early on, Posey is introduced. Posey has a chip on her shoulder about the other more magical ponies, because she doesn’t have any special abilities. It’s not full blown-racism, which is what the movie dealt with. But it is jealousy and where there’s jealousy it’s hard to get along.

This is one of the things that bothered me most about MLP as a whole. Earth ponies never seemed to have anything special about them. The franchise never really dug into why they’re special. The fact that they are “nice” and get along with everyone wasn’t a big selling point. As a girl growing up and collecting the dolls, It was rare I ever picked an Earth pony to buy. Unless of course the Earth pony was a rainbow pony. That made everything ok.

They Finally Fix the Earth Ponies

In the first part of the series they are having issues with magic. Even though the magic crystals are all in place it would seem that the magic emitted is not working right. Zipp is the first to notice that something is wrong and tries to figure things out. In doing so, things get worse before they get better. But afterwards the Earth ponies are imparted with a special magic of just their own.

Part of the revelation of powers comes with Hitch who is able to talk to animals. Posey who was having issues before is able to use “flower power” and make plants grow. It finally fixes the boring old Earth pony problem that the franchise has suffered from day one.

    Why it’s Exciting

The reason that fans are now super hyped is because of what they can do with the characters from here. This opens up so many more opportunities for Earth ponies to shine in their own stories. Now that we have more context about why they are good at things, it could be way different. Think about it! Applejack’s family was great with apples and orchards, but we never knew why. Now we get to witness the magic involved with doing even the most basic things. Which will make the world of Maretime Bay that much better.
