Rhea Perlman, Emerald Fennell Join Live-Action “Barbie” Film

I’m not really sure what to make of the upcoming “Barbie” film from Greta Gerwig. Either Warner Bros is calling in a ton of favors or the the film has a god-tier script. There is just no other explanation as to why so many people are signing on to be cast in this film. It’s basically a “Knives Out 2,” where the list of actors who aren’t in the film is smaller than the list of people IN the film. I don’t know that anyone asked for this, but WB Studios seems to be taking the John Hammond expense and sparing no expense.

“Barbie” already has Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan Gosling as Ken, as well as Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Simu Liu and Will Ferrell. Not enough? Well it was recently announced that the film will be adding even MORE stars, the list of which includes Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Ncuti Gatwa, Oscar winner Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya, and Jamie Demetriou. That is a LOT of star power for a film about a toy doll. It’s important to remember Gerwig’s track record, who most notably reinvented “Little Women” to become a critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated as well as her debut directorial debut with “Ladybird” that marked only the fifth nomination for a female director in Oscar history as of 2018.

To recap, that’s pretty much every single hot up and coming star in Hollywood plus blockbuster staples in the cast, plus darling Gerwig behind the camera with Noah Baumbach as a co-writer and producer. All for a film adaption based on a toy doll. I honestly don’t even know what to do with all of this information, but I guess put my down for one for “Barbie?”

No plot details or trailer has been released for the film as it is still in the early stages of production. “Barbie” is expected to be released sometime in 2023.
