Marvel Studios Proclaims Stance on LGBTQIA+ Legislation

Marvel Studios, pinnacle of superhero films, have taken a very public stand. Following a month of discourse around parent company Disney’s political contributions, the entertainment giant has their own statement.

Namely, Disney has come under fire for their large financial contributions to lawmakers who wrote, sponsored and support Florida’s nefarious “Don’t Say Gay’ bill, as well as voter suppression laws and other hot topic issues. Disney CEO Bob Chapek has since offered an apology of sorts, but, it hasn’t really helped members of the community who feel unsupported by Disney.

Marvel Studios posted a statement on their official social media platforms.

We strongly denounce any and ALL legislation that infringes on the basic human rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. Marvel Studios stands for hope, inclusivity and strength; and we proudly stand with the community. Today, we pledge to continue our strong commitment as allies who promote the values of equality, acceptance and respect.

A walkout was called for by Disney associates, cast members, and employees throughout all areas of the company. Those who participated stood for 15 minutes in protest of Disney’s handling of this situation. And, have alluded to more such actions coming.

To all employees who were able and comfortable to stand in solidarity for 15 minutes today, thank you so very much.

To those outside of Disney who have shared around this important moment for LGBTQIA+ Disney employees, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

    Tomorrow awaits…

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
