Internet of Things (IoT) is a revolution in human life that makes life simpler and more manageable. The world is currently amid an Internet of Things gold rush. Products launched by tech giants such as web cameras, digital assistants, motion sensors, and many others are rapidly coming to the market. It continues to flow into our homes, offices, and cars.

Although internet network devices make life easier, all Internet connections worldwide are like a double-edged sword. The safety factor has always been a frightening specter in technology. Moreover, the Internet of Things Security has not received much attention.

That’s why as a user, we need to protect ourselves in the best way we can. For example, you can use the help from a VPN service to protect yourself when going online. VPNs are the fundamental and most commonly used method to add another layer of protection. Anyone can easily install a VPN service on their phone effortlessly. Moreover, users can also find VPNs that work best to unblock Netflix, increasing their entertainment experience.

But, how about a smart home?

The Good Things about Smart Home

The smart home system does not escape its advantages and disadvantages despite providing ideal comfort, convenience, and practicality for modern society.

By having smart home technology, users can now rest easy because the house becomes easier to control. All things can be done as quickly as possible without help from a remote. With just one smartphone, everything can be controlled effortlessly.

The system also allows users to see notifications that appear through the cell phone if there is a problem at home. For example, a smart doorbell can make homeowners see and communicate with guests who come to the house, even when they are not at home.

Another example is a feature that tells users about the fire threat in the house. Smoke detection devices will send them notifications so they can react as quickly as possible to solve the problems.

The good thing about smart homes is cost-saving. Since the connected devices can be used more efficiently, electronic billis can be reduced as low as possible.

    The Risks

Although the smart home system can save electricity costs, it turns out that there are still shortcomings in its application. Where security risks and bugs often annoy users. Especially now that there are more and more proficient hackers, this tiny crack allows them to access internet-enabled smart home appliances.

Although it cannot prevent attacks by hackers and cybercriminals, users can take some actions proactively. To establish effective security measures, they must first understand the security vulnerabilities that lead to damage in hardware and software. Some examples are weak passwords, easy-to-hack interface design, not enough privacy, and inadequate physical protection.

But don’t worry, you can at least mitigate the risks with a few tips below:

    Tips on Mitigating The Risks

    1. Ensure The Design And Equipment Safety

Before purchasing an IoT device or solution, please ensure the safety of the design. If the provider cannot provide sufficient detailed information, the user should reconsider using specific equipment or solutions. Make sure that the manufacturers timely updates during the use of the equipment or device.

    2. Change Network Router Name

Change the name of your internet network router. The name given by the manufacturer is used to identify the router model. The router name should be unusual and unrelated to your personal information, such as name or address.

    3. Know Your Internet Network And Connected Devices

Your device becomes vulnerable when it connects to the internet. Tracking them becomes very difficult as many devices become more connected. To be safe, you must understand the network of devices connected to it. Know what kind of information the device can access. If your device has apps that feature social sharing, choose permissions carefully.

    4. Use a Strong Encryption Protocol

Your router must have a strong encryption method. Do not use public WiFi networks or networks without a reliable encryption protocol. Make sure you always use encryptions that are up-to-date, such as WPA2 instead of WEP or WPA. Timely installation of updates can help minimize risk.

    5. Use a Strong Password

The first thing to do is to change the default password. Cyber attackers may already know the IoT device’s default password and username. Second, use strong passwords and usernames that are hard to identify. Do not use passwords such as “password” or “123456”.

The password must consist of lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Also, make sure you change your password and username frequently.
