Pair Of Robotic Legs Runs 5K in Just Under an Hour

Cassie, a pair of robotic legs designed by Agility Robotics, has just completed its first 5k run. The robot did it on one charge, and had a time of 53 minutes, setting it at just under an hour. That’s a record for a robot!

For humans however, that record is held by Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda who ran it in just 12 minutes 35 seconds. The robot still has a long way to go to beat our fastest runners, but hey if they offered to replace my legs with these and I could use them in place of my car? I’d take it.

The OSU Dynamic Robotics Laboratory’s research team, led by Agility Robotics’ Jonathan Hurst, combined expertise from biomechanics and robot controls with new machine learning tools to accomplish something new: train a bipedal robot to run a full 5K on a single battery charge! This industry-first invention will unleash new levels of robot performance.
