Fans were delighted when during the official opening ceremony live-cast of Disneyland’s brand new Avengers Campus area in California Adventure revealed a surprise. Aside from the sneak peeks of offerings in the all new Marvel Studios’ themed land, Anthony Mackie made a very special announcement.

As you probably know, at the end of Disney+’s “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” series, Mackie’s character Sam Wilson followed in his comic book counter part’s footsteps, becoming the one and only Captain America. During the opening ceremonies live-stream, Mackie was carrying a leather bag, which fans recognized as the shield bag.

With the help of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, “the real” Captain America was introduced.

“It was an emotional moment for me to film the scene when Sam Wilson finally becomes Captain America,” Mackie said. “It’s a moment that is all about the future. A moment where kids of all races can look at Captain America and maybe see a little bit of themselves. I’m so proud to be a part of the cinematic universe and now a part of all of this. So with that.. it is my honor to introduce for the first time in Avengers Campus … Captain America!”

So, guests at the park will have the chance to do character meet and greets with Sam Wilson! Pretty exciting.

If you missed the live stream, you can catch it here.

Avengers Campus officially opens on Friday, June 4th 2021.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
