Its been literally a decade since Joe Cornish made his directorial debut, and John Boyega his acting debut in 2011’s “Attack the Block.” The cult comedy-horror film about a South London gang and a nurse in training fighting off aliens has only become more endearing in hindsight as the actors involved have taken on new projects. Boyega would of course find his way into a galaxy, far, far away with the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy. But now he’s back with Cornish to relive the story that started it all.
“Attack the Block 2” will feature the same team that made the original release. Cornish will return as writer and director, along with Nira Park and James Wilson returning as producers. Boyega will also serve as a producer this time in addition to his returning to the role of Moses.
Very little else was said about the film project, and no plot details were given. Deadline did feature statements from both Boyega and Cornish, indicating how excited they are to be returning to this world and continuing the story it told. In between, Cornish has kept himself busy with helping to write Ant-Man in 2015 and also creating the criminally underlooked family film, “The Kid Who Would Be King” in 2019.
As things are still early along in development, there’s no word yet as to whether one of the film’s other famous alumni will be returning. “Attack of the Block” also featured actress Jodie Whittaker, who would go on to even greater fame by taking up the mantle of The Doctor in long-running and beloved sci-fi series “Doctor Who.” Kind of funny in a way, she goes from a nurse to The Doctor, and still manages to find herself facing off against aliens.
Given the enthusiasm both Cornish and Boyega have for the project, it’s safe to assume that they want to create something special all over again. As more details are announced in the upcoming weeks, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
