Best Video Game Movies of All Time

Some people argue that movies based on video games aren’t good. Probably, these people have only seen cheap and lame 90s movies based on PC games. The good news is that even within the 90s collection there are gems of movies. But today, the situation has changed.

Thanks to modern technologies and the ability to learn from former mistakes, we have a pretty good collection of movies based on video games. The following list of movies has something for everyone. It’s not a rating of movies based on video games, it’s just a list of several movies that cover different tastes and preferences. If you are into video-game movies, go get your popcorn and choose a movie that you like the most.

    Warner Bros

    #1 Detective Pikachu

Whether you are a fan of the cartoon and games, or you have no idea what a Pikachu is, you will still love the movie, Detective Pikachu. One simply can’t help but fall in love with a little creature that says ‘Pika Pika’ in a very cute voice. The funny thing is that due to the plot of the movie, only the main hero understands what Pikachu says, while the rest of the world hears funny noises.

This fact makes the contrast between what Pikachu says and what people hear even funnier. Even though the movie was criticized by some magazines (no surprise), it has everything you might like. It has a parent-kids drama, great friendship and loyalty, love motives, mystery, action, amazing animation, and much, much more. It’s worth seeing Detective Pikachu at least once.

    #2 Mortal Kombat

It was mentioned at the beginning of the article that there were some good movies based on video games in the 90s. Well, Mortal Kombat is probably the only movie series that was quite good. It has its flaws and advantages, but it is worth watching even if you aren’t a fan of the games.

The interesting fact is that soon we will have a new 2021 Mortal Kombat movie. It would be interesting to watch the movies made in the 90s and compare them to the new movie. Would the new movie be better than the new one? While you are waiting, you can make a bet with your friend. Or you can go to a Dota betting site and make a bet on a favorite team.

    #3 Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

As you probably know, three movies have been released about the fictional character Lara Croft. First two in 2001 and 2003 respectively, the last one in 2018. All three movies were heavily criticized – there is an interesting pattern, most video game-based movies are criticized even though the audience likes them.

If you are into badass pretty women, then any Lara Croft movie will suit your tastes. The action movie sequels are worth watching simply because of the actions on the screen. Probably, the best two movies to watch are 2001 and the new one, while you can skip the second movie with Angelina Jolie – it deserves negative criticism.

    #4 Assassin’s Creed

Hardcore friends were thrilled and scared to see the new movie. Some thought it would be a failure, others believed it would be a total disaster. As a result, the movie had mixed reviews, some fans were disappointed. The funny fact is that the audience who had little understanding of the games or even had no idea that the movie was based on the games, actually liked the movie.

Yes, it has certain flaws, but it is still an epic movie that depicts two stories simultaneously. The first story is set in our time, the other story brings us back to the past. Two stories are related, and this fact is very important for the movie. It has a mystery, action, betrayals, etc. It’s definitely worth watching.

#5 Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Here is what you have to do – completely ignore all the negative comments about the movie. If you have seen negative criticism, just unsee it! It’s pretty difficult to name several movies that are worthy to watch once, not to mention twice or even more. But Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is definitely worth watching several times! The cast is perfect, the plot is amazing, the picture is breathtaking, and the battles are epic – what’s not to like?

The movie tells us the stories of several characters. The main heroes of the movie are Prince Dastan and Princess Tamina portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton – both decent actors. Both characters have a very important goal – protect the world and humanity from being destroyed.

While on their journey, they get into ridiculous and funny situations, fight against enemies, make new friends, and eventually, try to defeat the main villain – who is yet to be revealed. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is definitely worth watching a couple of times whenever you want to enjoy some amazing and epic battles, as well as the acting of amazing actors.

    #6 Resident Evil

Another movie that was criticized, but is very famous and loved by the audiences in many countries. Starring Milla Jovovich, and centered around the zombie apocalypse, the movie creates a lot of tension.

Viewers are wondering what has happened to the world, and why the zombies even appeared while cheering for the heroes to stay alive. Resident Evil has lots of fans around the world, and the movies are quite good, so it’s definitely worth watching the series.

    #7 World of Warcraft

People were waiting for this movie since it promised to be epic. And yes, the movie has some epic, huge battles between different races in the World of Warcraft. The hardcore fans of the game weren’t exactly impressed, but the rest of the world considers the movie as one of the best movies based on the video game.

    Conclusion

Debating whether movies based on games are good or bad will never end. Just like the debates whether online games help to make connections or not. But why debate when you can simply enjoy some really good movies? Take a look at the list in the article, some of the mentioned movies might sneak into your collection of favorite movies.
